About the Artist

Dale Ann Matthews, a painter based in Park City, Utah, draws inspiration from the vibrant local art community and the natural beauty that surrounds her. Her artistic journey began with a minor in Art at the University of Pittsburgh, where she became deeply influenced by the techniques of abstract expressionists such as Pollock, Kline, and, more recently, Richter. Their influence is evident in the expressive energy of her work.
Matthews explores a wide range of methods to create texture and depth. Bold brushstrokes, layered colors, and unconventional techniques—such as dripping paint, scratching the canvas, or incorporating plaster—give her paintings a tactile presence. In recent years, she has expanded her practice to steel surfaces, applying acrylics and acids to achieve both luminosity and dimension. These steel works are especially distinctive, transforming with the shifting light to reveal changing colors and moods.
For Matthews, abstraction is a language without boundaries. Her process is fluid and dynamic, allowing each work to develop organically into its own unique persona. Paint flows freely across canvas or steel—bright, dramatic, and unconfined—until the piece evolves into a singular expression of energy and form.
